MDR Calculator

Work out the merchant discount rate on a payment, and what lands in your account once it and its GST come off.

Amount you are entering

From 15 October 2026, UPI merchant payments above ₹2,000 carry 0.4% MDR on the full amount, capped at ₹300. At or below ₹2,000 there is no MDR, and merchants taking under ₹1 lakh a month by UPI QR stay exempt.

Assumes MDR is charged as a percentage of the transaction value plus any flat fee, with GST on the MDR itself rather than on the sale. Your acquirer agreement is the authority — check a real settlement report before pricing against these numbers.

What MDR actually costs you

Merchant discount rate is the cut your acquirer keeps on every card or wallet collection, and GST is charged on that cut as well. On a ₹5,000 credit card sale at 2%, the MDR is ₹100 and the GST on it is another ₹18, so ₹4,882 settles rather than ₹5,000. Across a month of card volume that gap is real money, and most merchants only meet it in the settlement report.

Enter the amount two ways depending on what you know. MDR inclusive means the figure is what the customer pays, and the calculator tells you what you keep. MDR exclusive means the figure is what you want to land, and the calculator grosses the charge up so the net after MDR comes out exactly right — useful when you are recovering the charge from the customer or quoting a price that has to clear a fixed amount.

Not every rail costs the same, and UPI is about to change. From 15 October 2026, UPI merchant payments above ₹2,000 carry 0.4% MDR on the full amount, capped at ₹300 per transaction. At or below ₹2,000 there is still no MDR, RuPay debit and UPI Autopay mandates stay exempt, and merchants taking under ₹1 lakh a month by UPI QR are exempt as well — which is why collecting a large amount across several smaller QR codes can bring the cost to nothing.

MDR formula

MDR = Customer pays × MDR rate ÷ 100 + Flat fee. It is zero when the payment is at or below the payment method's free threshold, and it is held at the cap where the method has one. GST on MDR = MDR × GST rate ÷ 100. Total deducted = MDR + GST on MDR. You receive = Customer pays − Total deducted. Effective cost of collection = Total deducted ÷ Customer pays × 100. Each figure is rounded to the paisa. In MDR exclusive mode, Customer pays = (Target + Flat fee × (1 + GST ÷ 100)) ÷ (1 − MDR rate ÷ 100 × (1 + GST ÷ 100)), rounded up to the next paisa. Once the cap applies it is Target + Cap × (1 + GST ÷ 100), and it is simply the target when that sits at or below the free threshold; the calculator uses the lowest charge that delivers the target.

How to use the MDR calculator

  1. 1Under Amount you are entering, choose MDR inclusive if you know what the customer pays, or MDR exclusive if you know what you want to receive.
  2. 2Type the figure in Amount customer pays or Amount you want to receive.
  3. 3Pick the Payment method; a typical rate fills the MDR rate field, which you can overwrite with the rate on your acquirer agreement.
  4. 4Leave GST on the MDR at 18% unless your acquirer's invoice shows otherwise, and enter any Flat fee per transaction your gateway charges.
  5. 5Read Customer pays, You receive, MDR charged, GST on MDR, Total deducted and Effective cost of collection.
  6. 6To collect a large amount by UPI without MDR, tap Split this into zero-MDR QR codes to open the splitter with the amount filled in.

Worked example: MDR on a ₹25,000 credit card payment

A clinic collects ₹25,000 for a procedure by credit card at a 2% MDR. In MDR inclusive mode the MDR calculator shows an MDR of ₹500 (25,000 × 2 ÷ 100), GST on MDR of ₹90 (500 × 18 ÷ 100) and a total deduction of ₹590. You receive ₹24,410, and the effective cost of collection is 2.36%, not 2%, because the GST sits on top of the fee.

If the full ₹25,000 has to land, switch to MDR exclusive and enter 25,000. The charge becomes 25,000 ÷ (1 − 0.02 × 1.18) = 25,000 ÷ 0.9764, rounded up to ₹25,604.27, with ₹512.09 of MDR and ₹92.18 of GST coming off. Simply adding 2% and charging ₹25,500 would still leave you ₹24,898.20. The same ₹25,000 paid through the UPI merchant preset at 0.4% costs ₹100 plus ₹18 of GST, so ₹24,882 reaches your settlement.

Practical checks on MDR

  • Compare the You receive figure with one line of your real settlement report; if they differ, your agreed rate or flat fee is not the preset.
  • Enter the flat fee if your gateway charges one: on a ₹200 debit card payment at 0.9% plus ₹3, the total deduction is ₹5.66, an effective 2.83%, against 1.13% on a ₹5,000 payment.
  • On the UPI merchant preset the MDR stops at ₹300, reached at ₹75,000, so the effective cost falls on bigger payments: 0.47% on ₹25,000 but ₹354 in all, or 0.35%, on ₹1,00,000.
  • Make sure your GSTIN is on record with your acquirer and keep the tax invoices it issues for MDR, so the GST you pay on the fee is available as input tax credit.

MDR calculator FAQs

MDR, or merchant discount rate, is the fee a merchant pays to accept a digital payment. It is usually a percentage of the transaction value, sometimes with a flat fee on top, and it is deducted before the money settles into the merchant's account. GST applies on the MDR itself.
