What is a barcode generator?

A barcode stores a product code as bars that a scanner reads in a fraction of a second, so the person at the counter types nothing and bills the right item. A barcode generator turns a code you already have, such as an SKU, an item number or a GTIN, into a printable image. The bars hold only the code. The name and price live in your billing software, which looks the code up when it is scanned, so the same barcode keeps working when you change the price.

Which type you choose depends on who will scan it. EAN-13 is the 13-digit number on packaged goods. If your product will be sold through supermarkets, distributors or online marketplaces, that number should be a GTIN licensed to your company by GS1 India, and Indian numbers usually begin with 890. A made-up EAN-13 can clash with a real product elsewhere. For codes that only your own shop scans, Code 128 is simpler: it takes letters and numbers, so an SKU like RICE-5KG works as it is.

QR codes work differently. They are square, hold far more data than a line barcode and are usually scanned with a phone camera, which suits a web link, a menu or a UPI payment link printed on a counter card. Many basic counter scanners read only line barcodes, so for billing products keep to EAN-13 or Code 128, and use QR for what customers scan with their own phones.

Barcode Generator features

Automatic EAN-13 check digit

Type the first 12 digits and the 13th check digit is calculated for you. A full 13-digit code with a wrong check digit is rejected before you download.

Live preview with error check

The barcode redraws as you type, and the download buttons stay disabled while the value cannot be encoded.

Product name on the PDF

Add an optional label and it prints above the barcode on a small A6 page, centred and ready to print. The PNG holds the barcode alone.

Fills from saved products

Picking a saved product fills in its barcode, or its SKU if it has none, with its name as the label. It switches to EAN-13 when the saved barcode is 12 or 13 digits.

Readable number under the bars

EAN-13 and Code 128 barcodes print the encoded value as text below the bars, so staff can type it in if a scan fails.

Tidy file names

Downloads are named after the label or value, such as Basmati-Rice-5kg.png, so a folder of barcodes stays easy to search.

How does it work?

  1. 1Choose the barcode type — Code 128 for SKUs, EAN-13 for retail, QR for links
  2. 2Type the value, or pick a saved product from your workspace
  3. 3Download as PNG or PDF and print or share it

Before you print barcodes for your products

  • Give every variant its own code: a 500 g pack and a 1 kg pack of the same product need different barcodes
  • Never reuse a retired code for a different product, since old stock with that label may still be on a shelf
  • Save the same code against the product in your billing software, or the scanner will read it and find nothing
  • Keep Code 128 values short; on a small label, fewer characters mean wider bars that scan more reliably
  • Leave clear white space on both sides of the bars when you cut or stick labels
  • Print at 100% scale and test-scan one barcode with your own scanner before printing a batch
