What an online order actually pays you
Listed commission rates rarely tell the whole story. Once you add packaging cost, payment gateway charges and GST on the commission itself, the gap between the order value a customer pays and what actually lands in your account can be 30% or more.
Enter the order value and the charges that apply on your aggregator account to see the real payout per order and your effective take-home percentage. Online order commission formula
Commission = Order value × Commission % ÷ 100. GST on commission = Commission × GST on commission % ÷ 100. Gateway fee = Order value × Gateway fee % ÷ 100. Total deductions = Commission + GST on commission + Gateway fee + Packaging cost. Real payout = Order value − Total deductions, and Take-home % = Real payout ÷ Order value × 100. How to use the Online Order Commission Calculator
Keep a recent payout statement from the delivery app open while you fill this in.
- 1Enter the order value: the food value the platform charges its commission on, as shown on your payout statement.
- 2Enter the platform commission percentage from your aggregator agreement or latest payout report.
- 3Check GST on commission. It starts at 18%, the rate platforms charge on their commission.
- 4Enter the payment gateway fee as a percentage of the order value.
- 5Enter your packaging cost per order in rupees: containers, bags, cutlery and seals.
- 6Read Total deductions, Your real payout and Take-home %. They update as you type, so you can run your small, average and large order sizes one after another.
Worked example: payout on an ₹800 delivery order
Say a cloud kitchen gets an ₹800 order on an app charging 22% food delivery commission, with 18% GST on that commission, a 1.8% payment gateway fee and ₹30 of packaging. Commission is ₹800 × 22% = ₹176. GST on commission is ₹176 × 18% = ₹31.68. The gateway fee is ₹800 × 1.8% = ₹14.40. Add the ₹30 packaging and total deductions come to ₹252.08, so the real payout is ₹547.92, a take-home of 68.5%.
Now run a ₹300 order with the same settings. Commission is ₹66, GST on it ₹11.88, the gateway fee ₹5.40 and packaging still ₹30, so deductions total ₹113.28 and the payout is ₹186.72, only 62.2% of the order. Packaging is a fixed rupee cost, so it takes a bigger share of small orders. Work out your smallest common orders separately before you run discounts on them.
Tips for getting a realistic payout figure
- Take the commission rate from a recent payout report, not the rate card you signed up on. The effective rate on your statement can differ from the headline rate.
- If your statement also charges GST on the gateway fee, include it in the gateway field: a 2% fee plus 18% GST is 2.36%.
- Work out each platform separately. Commission, gateway fees and packaging rules differ between apps, and a single blended figure can hide a platform that loses you money.
- Compare take-home % with your food cost. A 68% take-home on a dish whose food cost is 35% of the order value leaves 33% for rent, staff and profit.
- Check the result against one real order from your payout report. If they differ by more than a few rupees, a charge is missing or the commission is charged on a different base.
