Splitting tips manually gets messy fast once you're accounting for different shift lengths or roles. A server who worked a full double shift and one who covered the last two hours shouldn't get equal shares — but agreeing on exactly how to weight it is where most disputes start.
This calculator splits a tip pool three ways: equally across everyone, proportionally by hours worked, or by a points/shares system where you assign each role or person a weight. Add your staff, pick a method, and the split updates instantly.
Tip split formula
Equal split: each person's share = Total tip pool ÷ number of staff rows. By hours / shares: each person's share = Total tip pool × (that person's hours or shares ÷ total hours or shares of everyone listed). In both modes the payouts add up to the full pool, as long as at least one person has hours or shares entered in the weighted mode. See tip pooling for the common ways pools are set up.
How to use the tip split calculator
- 1Choose Equal split or By hours / shares at the top.
- 2Enter the Total tip pool, including any card or UPI tips you are pooling with cash.
- 3Replace the sample rows (Staff 1, Staff 2, Staff 3) with your staff names. Tap Add staff member to add someone and the cross to remove a row.
- 4If you chose By hours / shares, enter each person's hours worked or agreed points in the Hours / shares column. Equal split ignores this column.
- 5Read each person's payout in the list below. Amounts show to the paisa and change as you type.
Worked example: splitting a ₹12,000 weekly tip pool
A café collects ₹12,000 in tips over a week, cash and UPI together. Four people shared the floor, and the shift roster shows Riya worked 40 hours, Arjun 30, Meena 30 and Sameer 20, a total of 120 hours. Choose By hours / shares, enter the pool and the hours, and the tip split calculator works out ₹100 per hour: Riya ₹4,000, Arjun ₹3,000, Meena ₹3,000 and Sameer ₹2,000. An equal split would pay everyone ₹3,000, moving ₹1,000 from Riya to Sameer.
If the team agrees on role points instead, enter those in the same column. With Riya as captain on 3 shares, Arjun and Meena on 2 each and Sameer as helper on 1, there are 8 shares worth ₹1,500 each, so the payouts are ₹4,500, ₹3,000, ₹3,000 and ₹1,500. To weight by both role and hours, multiply them before entering: 40 hours × 3 points = 120 for Riya.
Tip pooling checklist for managers
- Agree the method (equal, by hours or by points) with staff before the period starts, and write it down.
- Take hours from your attendance register or shift roster for the same dates as the pool, not from memory.
- Remove the row of anyone who was not on shift, and any blank row. In Equal split every row gets a share, even one with 0 hours or no name.
- Shares show to the paisa, so round payouts to convenient amounts and carry the small remainder into the next pool.
- Show the team the payout list, even a screenshot, so everyone can see how the split was worked out.

An equal split divides the pool evenly regardless of role or hours. A points-based split assigns each person a weight (points or shares) reflecting role, seniority or hours, and divides the pool proportionally to those weights — common when front-of-house and support roles are pooled together.
Tip pooling rules and norms vary by region and by local labour regulations — some jurisdictions restrict who can be included in a tip pool. Check what's permitted where you operate before deciding who's eligible.
Use the 'by hours' method — enter each person's hours for the shift or period, and the pool is divided proportionally, so someone who worked twice as long receives roughly twice the share.
Either — enter the total tip pool for whatever period you're splitting (a shift, a day, a week) along with the hours or shares for that same period.
Run the calculator twice. First choose By hours / shares and add two rows, Floor and Kitchen, with the agreed shares, such as 7 and 3, so a ₹10,000 pool splits into ₹7,000 and ₹3,000. Then run each group's amount across its own staff by hours or points. Agree the group shares with the team before the period starts.
Yes. Choose By hours / shares and enter each person's percentage in the Hours / shares column, for example 50, 30 and 20. Because each entry is divided by the total of all entries, a ₹6,000 pool pays ₹3,000, ₹1,800 and ₹1,200. If your percentages do not add up to 100, the calculator scales them proportionally, so the full pool is still paid out.
Yes. It is free, needs no signup or app, and runs in your phone's browser, so you can settle tips at the counter at the end of a shift. The calculator does not save staff names or amounts between visits, so re-enter them each time or keep a screenshot of the payout list as your record.
The calculator splits whatever amount you enter, so it works the same way for a service charge pool as for tips. Whether you can charge it is a separate matter: in India, consumer protection guidelines say a service charge cannot be added to a bill automatically or made compulsory for the guest. Check the current rules before you bill it.
