Why use a VAT calculator
If you sell to customers or buy from suppliers in countries that use VAT — the UK, EU, UAE, South Africa and 170+ others — you constantly need to move between net and gross prices. Doing it by hand is error-prone, especially with rates like 12.5% or 23%.
This calculator works both directions. Enter a net amount to see the VAT and gross total, or enter a VAT-inclusive price to recover the net amount and the tax inside it. Quick-select buttons cover the most common rates worldwide, and you can type any custom rate.
VAT formula
Add VAT: VAT = Net amount × Rate ÷ 100, and Gross amount = Net amount + VAT. Remove VAT: Net amount = Gross amount ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100), and VAT = Gross amount − Net amount. The rate is the standard rate of the country you pick in the table, or your own figure when Use a custom rate is ticked.
How to use the VAT calculator
- 1Choose Add VAT if your figure is before tax, or Remove VAT if it already includes VAT.
- 2Search the country table by name or two-letter code, such as AE or GB, and tap the row to load its standard rate.
- 3If the item takes a reduced or zero rate, tick Use a custom rate and type the rate that applies in the Custom rate field.
- 4Enter the figure in Amount before VAT or Amount including VAT, depending on the mode.
- 5Read the Net amount, VAT amount and Gross amount shown below the fields.
Worked example: VAT on a UAE quote and a London hotel bill
A Dubai supplier quotes AED 8,000 plus VAT for a commercial oven for your new outlet there. In the VAT calculator, choose Add VAT, pick the United Arab Emirates at 5% and enter 8,000. VAT = 8,000 × 5 ÷ 100 = 400, so the gross amount you pay is AED 8,400.
Going the other way, a London hotel bill for a trade fair comes to £1,500 including 20% VAT. Choose Remove VAT, pick the United Kingdom and enter 1,500. Net = 1,500 ÷ 1.20 = £1,250, and VAT = 1,500 − 1,250 = £250. Taking 20% of £1,500 instead would give £300 of VAT and a wrong net of £1,200, overstating the tax by £50. Whatever currency the invoice is in, the arithmetic is the same.
VAT tips for Indian businesses dealing abroad
- Check whether a foreign quote is net or gross. Business quotes in the UK and EU are usually net of VAT, while prices shown to consumers usually include it.
- To check a VAT-inclusive figure in your head, the VAT is rate ÷ (100 + rate) of the gross: one-sixth at 20% and one twenty-first at 5%.
- If you invoice from a VAT registration abroad, show the net amount, VAT rate and VAT amount as separate lines, as VAT invoices generally require.
- For sales inside India, charge GST rather than VAT: split it into CGST and SGST for a sale within your state, or charge IGST for an interstate sale.
- Record the VAT on a foreign supplier's invoice separately from the cost in your books; whether a foreign business can reclaim it depends on that country's rules.
- Rates change with national budgets, so confirm the current rate on the tax authority's website before invoicing a large amount.

VAT calculator FAQs
Multiply the net price by the VAT rate and add it on. At 20% VAT, a 100 net price carries 20 of VAT for a 120 gross total. This calculator does it instantly for any rate.
Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate). A 120 gross price at 20% VAT is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 net, with 20 of VAT. Never subtract the percentage directly — that gives the wrong answer.
They work the same way — a tax on the value added at each stage. Different countries just use different names and rates. India uses GST (use our GST calculator for CGST/SGST splits); the UK, EU and many others use VAT.
Use the standard rate of the country where the sale is taxed — for example 20% in the UK, 19% in Germany, 5% in the UAE. Many countries also have reduced rates for essentials; check the category of your goods or services.
The table holds standard rates for more than 60 countries, including the United Kingdom at 20%, Germany at 19%, Saudi Arabia at 15% and the UAE at 5%. Countries that call the tax GST, such as Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Canada, carry a GST label. Search by country name or two-letter code to find a row, and tick Use a custom rate for any country that is not listed.
Yes. Tick Use a custom rate and type any rate, such as 5% for a UK reduced-rate item or 7% for Germany's reduced rate. For many countries the table also shows the reduced rates as a reminder, in the notes column on wider screens and under the selected rate. Enter 0 for a zero-rated item and the VAT amount shows as zero.
Yes. Money on Setu's calculators is shown in the currency saved in the free Business Profile tool, which is Indian rupees until you change it. Pick euro, pound, dirham or any other currency there and the VAT calculator follows in the same browser. The VAT arithmetic is identical in every currency, so you can also leave it in rupees and read the numbers as your invoice currency.
Usually not. Exports of goods and services from India are treated as zero-rated supplies under GST, and any VAT on imported goods is normally paid by the importer in the buyer's country. You charge foreign VAT yourself only if you are registered for VAT there, for example when selling from stock held in that country. Digital services sold to overseas consumers can follow different rules, so check with an adviser.
