Composition Scheme

Also called: composition dealer

What is Composition Scheme?

The composition scheme lets eligible small businesses pay GST at a low flat rate on turnover instead of the normal rate on each supply, with far lighter filing. In exchange they cannot collect GST from customers or claim input tax credit.

Why Composition Scheme matters

For a small shop or restaurant selling mainly to consumers, the scheme cuts compliance work sharply. For anyone selling to businesses it is usually the wrong choice, because customers get no credit from your bills.

How Composition Scheme works in practice

A composition dealer issues a bill of supply rather than a tax invoice, and must state on it that they are not eligible to collect tax. Crossing the turnover limit or making certain interstate supplies pushes you out of the scheme.

Common mistakes with Composition Scheme

  • Issuing a tax invoice and collecting GST while registered under the scheme.
  • Assuming input tax credit can still be claimed on purchases.
  • Missing the turnover limit and continuing to bill at the composition rate.

Frequently asked questions

Eligible small restaurants can opt in at a concessional flat rate, provided they stay within the turnover limit and other conditions.
