Debit Entry
Also called: debit side
What is Debit Entry?
A debit entry is the left-hand side of a double-entry transaction, written as Dr. Debits increase assets and expenses and decrease liabilities, income and equity — it is a direction, not a judgement about good or bad.
Why Debit Entry matters
Most bookkeeping confusion starts with debits, largely because a bank statement uses the word from the bank's point of view rather than yours. In your own books, cash coming in is a debit.
How Debit Entry works in practice
Learn the rule by account type rather than memorising cases: assets and expenses increase with debits, everything else increases with credits. Every entry needs debits equal to credits.
Worked example
Paying ₹5,000 rent debits the rent expense account and credits the bank account.
