E-Way Bill
Also called: eway bill, electronic way bill
What is E-Way Bill?
An e-way bill is an electronically generated document required for moving consignments of goods above a specified value. It carries a unique number along with the invoice, transporter and vehicle details, and must accompany the goods in transit.
Why E-Way Bill matters
Goods stopped in transit without a valid e-way bill can be detained and penalised, and the penalty usually lands on the consignment owner rather than the transporter.
How E-Way Bill works in practice
Generate the bill from the invoice data before dispatch, and update the vehicle details if the consignment changes trucks mid-route. Each e-way bill also has a validity period tied to the distance to be covered.
Frequently asked questions
No. It applies above a consignment value threshold, with exemptions for certain goods and short local movements.
