Basket Size
Also called: items per bill, units per transaction
What is Basket Size?
Basket size is the average number of items per bill. It sits alongside average order value: one measures how much a customer spends, the other how many things they buy.
Why Basket Size matters
Basket size explains movements in order value. A rising AOV from price increases is a very different signal from one driven by customers buying more items.
Basket Size formula
Basket size = Total items sold ÷ Number of bills
Read alongside AOV to separate price effects from volume effects.
How Basket Size works in practice
Track both together. If basket size is flat while AOV rises, growth is coming from price, which has a ceiling that item count does not.
