Gross Salary

Also called: gross pay

What is Gross Salary?

Gross salary is total earnings before deductions — basic pay plus allowances such as HRA, dearness allowance, special allowance and any bonus. It sits between CTC and take-home pay.

Why Gross Salary matters

Gross salary is the base for most statutory calculations and the figure that appears at the top of a payslip. Employees usually quote it, employers usually quote CTC, and neither is take-home.

Gross Salary formula

Gross salary = Basic + HRA + DA + Allowances + Bonus

Net pay = gross salary − employee deductions − TDS.

How Gross Salary works in practice

Structure it deliberately, because the split between basic pay and allowances changes provident fund, gratuity and tax outcomes for both sides.

Frequently asked questions

No. CTC also includes employer contributions and provisions that never reach the employee.
