Professional Tax
Also called: PT, P Tax
What is Professional Tax?
Professional tax is a state-level tax on employment, deducted from salary by the employer and paid to the state government. Rates, slabs and applicability vary by state, and some states do not levy it at all.
Why Professional Tax matters
The amounts are small but the compliance is real: registration, monthly or annual deposits and returns, per state where you employ people. Multi-state employers routinely miss a state.
How Professional Tax works in practice
Register in each state where you have employees, apply that state's slab, and deposit on its schedule. Payroll software handles the variation better than a spreadsheet does.
