SGST

Also called: State GST, State Goods and Services Tax, UTGST

What is SGST?

SGST is the State Goods and Services Tax — the half of GST on an intra-state supply that goes to the state where the supply happens. Union territories charge the equivalent UTGST instead, at the same rate.

Why SGST matters

SGST is what makes your local sales revenue for your own state government, and it is the head your state authority checks during scrutiny. It must be printed and filed separately from CGST even though the two are always equal.

SGST formula

SGST = Taxable value × (GST rate ÷ 2) ÷ 100

Equal to CGST on the same invoice line, and replaced by UTGST in union territories.

How SGST works in practice

Because SGST follows the place of supply rather than your office address, a branch billing from another state charges that state's SGST. Multi-outlet businesses usually register separately in each state for exactly this reason.

Frequently asked questions

They work identically. UTGST applies in union territories without their own legislature, SGST applies in states.
